We may even follow a few religiously.

Although this is good if you’re in the building phase of your business, I would caution against the rabbit hole of over following.

You know that feeling of, “Oh man she did that so well, I guess I won’t be doing that!”

This need to see what other people are doing can be a slippery slope and I caution you to create a mental red flag every time you find yourself being sucked in with the over following syndrome.

Don’t forget how frigging amazing YOU are and how your special something – something is needed.

Here’s the other thing about over following people, you tend to feel like a copycat (remember that as a child? LOL!). You see someone write something, sell something, post something and you automatically think… “Well now I can’t write about that!”

But, YES you CAN!

I agree with you, being a copycat is not cool – Cats = cool, being a copycat=not cool!

I’ve been on the other side of this;  peers taking my ideas and copying them and honestly, it’s not the best feeling, (even though my mother says, “you should fill honored”). We work our butts off to put great content out there and to have someone ride our coattails and copy our stuff – well, it can be downright annoying.

So how do we put our special something – something into our content even when someone else already nailed it?

Mindset shift → Anything we write about, for the most part, is recycled information. I am sure this topic has been written about before. The word copycat, I didn’t make that up, but I have taken it and created my own story around it. We all have experiences and they cannot be copied by anyone.

So, when you want to write about something and you have the thought, “Well _____{insert name} owns that because she spoke about it first.”  ask yourself “is this really true?”
No one owns the word sales funnel or email marketing. Just because someone wrote about struggling in marketing doesn’t mean he or she owns that term. You can still write about it, you simply need to put your spin (your experience) on it.

Respect your peers → We don’t want to copy, it is simply wrong. I see a lot of people copying especially in Facebook groups and I don’t agree with it at all. If you LOVE something that someone else is doing I urge you to see what it is you love about it and then make it your own. Of course it is an honor when someone loves your stuff, but it’s not so wonderful when they copy it and act like it is their own. So, we always want to respect our peers. Here is what I do. When I see someone who makes me go, “Wow that is brilliant!” I get on a call with them and talk shop. I get into their head and find out how they created this particular program. I love hearing the passion in someone’s voice when they talk about their business. I find out what is working and what is not. If I think their program is way too perfect to reinvent… I ask to affiliate.

If I think I can make it even better I assess and make it my own.

I assess what I love about it; how it is delivered, pricing, coaching format etc. Then I put my own ideas into it and create my very own program that has all my special something – something all over it and has very little to do with the way they are offering it. Again, many programs are recycled, which is fine, as long as you are not copying formats, names, and deliverables – make it your own.
Of course we should NEVER copy a name – ever!

Finally, if you respect someone and you also want to write about it or share it with your audience, give them a shout out. Hyper-link people to their blog, but give credit where credit is due.

Mind your business → I can’t say this enough. When we over follow we end up stuck because we are constantly saying NO to ourselves. “No, you can’t do that because she did.” Or “Nope that won’t fly… she created that, back to the drawing board.”When you are so busy minding everyone else’s business you prevent yourself from growing yours. Nose down and grind girl! You have every right to own a piece of the online space.

In fact, I will always argue the point that there are specific people who need YOU. So, if you are too busy “following” they may never have the chance to find you. Get out there, do your thing and keep putting your special sauce out to the world… you’re needed girl!

Definitely more pro’s though! There is plenty room, content, and idea’s for us all. I truly believe if we are confident in what we are doing content creation is never a struggle. We mind our business so we can serve our people they way that is best for them. For those people who may be copying you… ahhh, this can be tough and I believe for the most part you have to let it go UNLESS it is blatant word for word, images, etc. Then I would absolutely let them know you don’t appreciate the sharing of your hard work without any mentions or hyperlinks.

Keep working hard and doing your thing… there are people who need you! xo
