I’m Calling BS On Solopreneurs Making It Seem So Easy!

I’m calling BS on all the Solopreneurs out there who are selling their life as easy and balanced.

Well, maybe if you have been at this for quite some time by now you have it more balanced, but I will tell you, if you are just getting started, there is no such thing as balance.

I know that is not what you want to hear but the struggle is real.

It’s a great struggle… fun, inspiring, and all those feelings of victory “YES, I am finally going for my dreams!” type of stuff.

But, let’s be real here, like REALLY REAL!

Starting your own business is hard.

So, I want to share the truth so you can put your big-girl pants on and get down and dirty into creating a kick-ass business without feeling like you are constantly doing something wrong…

…you should be working non-stop, feeling overwhelmed with tech stuff, and totally frustrated that every time you get one thing done there is something else to address.

This is the way this solopreneur stuff goes…

When I first started I had many moments of, “What the hell am I thinking, this is a nightmare!”

Entrepreneur life…the turmoil of loving what I did but hating what it took to allow me to do it.

I didn’t get the whole online space.

Social media say what?

Email marketing – eeh um, I don’t know what that is!

It is no joke and of course it doesn’t help that half your family and friends think you are home eating Bon Bon’s (do they still exists?) and watching re-runs of The Real Housewives of _____(fill in your favorite).

There are a ton of moving parts when creating an online business. It’s sort of like that annoying person in the pool who keeps splashing you in the face over and over – to the point where you have to go under, (usually an annoying sibling or boy who liked you and this was his idea of flirting…yeah NOT!)

Seriously though, it is constant. There is always something else that needs to get done and in that there is zero balance.

So, by now I’m sure you are thinking, “Geez Mare, thanks for the “motivation” this entrepreneur thing sounds hopeless!”

GOOD NEWS!

There is a ton of hope; I want to make sure to give it to you straight – not wrapped up in shiny BS with a sparkly bow on top!

This is where all that passion they talk about comes in. You HAVE TO HAVE PASSION for what you do.

Knowing your WHY is so incredibly important because that is the one thing that will anchor you to fight through the BS and figure out a system that works for you.

When I first started I thought goals and passion was all I needed…HELLO reality!

That thought is what created more imbalance than anything else in my business.

Again, passion is great, it truly is the wind beneath your entrepreneurial wings but you MUST have systems and strategies in place… MUST!

The only way to balance is through strategy.

For emerging entrepreneurs this is a missing link because they think they need to start first, get to know the business before they create systems and strategies.

Not true, in fact I would say it could be detrimental to your business and for sure to your work life balance.

There are a few ways to combat emerging entrepreneur imbalance… here are a few things for you to consider:

    1. Delegate things you simply have no clue on – graphics, tech stuff, social media… whatever it might be, delegate small things so you can focus on the big things and start generating income. Check out Fiverr.com – a great place to start on a smaller budget.

    1. Look at things in smaller time blocks – we all started our businesses in hopes of creating a particular lifestyle. When you will achieve that, well that might take a few years, so why not focus on the next 90-days? My coach Todd Herman speaks of goals in 90-Day increments, and I will tell you it has made a HUGE difference in my life and my business. Balance is achievable now!
        1. Choose a goal you want to achieve in the next 90-Days

      1. Create a system of who is going to do what, when, and how. What are the outcomes of this strategy? Go through this exercise with each goal you create.

  1. Be realistic – we entrepreneurs dream big, take big risks, and we truly go for it… it’s simply what makes us entrepreneurs. At the same time we need to tame our imaginations and keep things realistic. If you don’t know technology stuff, why are you trying to code your website?
Seriously though, these are the kind of things we do that actually take us out of our businesses, it is a detriment. Knowing what you are capable of and being honest with what you are not, is important. I get that money is tight, but think outside the box.
Do you live by a college or a Vocational School? They are always looking for internships. Website designers, graphic designers, videographers, photographers etc. Think outside the box without spending money you don’t have.

I don’t mean to be a ‘Debbie Downer’ but I had to call BS on all those who are making this entrepreneurial journey seem so simple. It can make all of you who are getting your feet wet seem like there is no hope.

There is hope. You can do this, you simply have to keep it real and know for the first couple of months balance will be scarce.

Put those big girl pants on, dig deep, and know all the hard work you are putting in now will pay off. Let your passion fuel you for now.

Create systems and strategies right away and try to simply stay in the next 90-days.

Not many entrepreneurs make it, and I believe it has a lot to do with this illusion that this is easy – so I had to call BS and I hope in doing so you can see there is hope – you are possible and you can achieve your entrepreneurial dreams.

Let nothing get in your way!
